Louise Bourgeois - The Fabric Works
Louise Bourgeois is one of the most influential contemporary artists. As a woman who lived through the past century actively creating art, constantly producing deep pieces that dive into the roots of her childhood, often a source of pain and conflict.
Originating from a family of tapestry restorers, she took her first steps into the art world while living in Paris, and then continued her journey of discovery in New York.
After spending some time painting, she completely turned her talents to the pursuit of sculpture, exploring the imaginary worlds and flights of fancy of childhood, using her works to convey feelings of resentments, betrayal and jealousy, but never without being paired up with joyful elements.
She is universally famous for her series of works featuring spiders, known as “Maman”. This series features several giant spiders made of steel and bronze, showcased all around the world in places like the Guggenheim Museum of Bilbao and the National Gallery of Ottawa, in Canada.
Her sculptures feature various materials, including rubber, wood, stone, metal and fabrics, used to underline specific symbolism.
Her works of fabric are featured in the wonderful exhibition brought to the public by the Emilio e Annabianca Vedova Foundation in Venice.
In fact, from June 5 to September 19 visitors will have the opportunity to admire the works of fabric of this French artist, in a collection known as “the fabric works”. This will be a unique exhibition because it includes so many works never seen before, displayed in the exhibition grounds of the Vedova Foundations for the first time ever.
